2009/2010 Religious School Curriculum Overview

Educational Mission
At East End Temple we strive to create a home of Jewish values in which all participants (regardless of age, background, gender, etc.) can learn to live a meaningful life in a Jewish way.

Our curriculum is built around six key Jewish strands: God and Spirituality, Prayer and Hebrew, History and Israel, Torah and Sacred Texts, Justice and Ethics, and Community and Identity. Every lesson in every grade incorporates activities that relate to one or more of these six areas.

Core Concepts
1) God and Spirituality : I can develop a personal understanding of and relationship with God while defining what role spirituality plays in my life.

2) Prayer and Hebrew : I can build a relationship with prayer by interpreting its literal and personal meaning and learning Hebrew.

3) History and Israel :Judaism is based upon thousands of years of history. In order to live as a Jew in the modern world, I must learn about the experiences of the Jewish people and the land of Israel.

4) Torah and Sacred Texts :Sacred texts are essential elements in the foundation of Judaism. The study of the origins, interpretations, and uses of these texts, can add meaning and purpose to my life.

5) Justice and Ethics :As Rabbi Hillel said, “What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor; that is the whole Law; the rest is commentary, go and learn it.” To live an ethical and just life, I need to study the “commentary.”

6) Community and Identity :Judaism is a personal and communal journey, neither of which can exist without the other. Jewish identity is formed and grows through individual actions and deeds as well as those taken as part of a larger community.

Each student will study the core concepts through the lens of a related theme and at an age appropriate level. Click here for more information about each grade.

This year we are implementing a new, self-paced Hebrew curriculum.  Details of this program and supporting resources can be found on the Hebrew Curriculum page.
