Celebrate the High Holy Days with EET

We are pleased to be offering a variety of services and programs for all ages.

Havdalah, S’lichot, and Dessert

Havdalah, S’lichot and Dessert
Saturday, September 4, 7:30 PM
Havdalah Set
Havdalah ends Shabbat by engaging our five senses: seeing the flame of the braided candle, feeling its heat, smelling sweet spices, tasting wine, and hearing blessings, as we bid Shabbat farewell for another week.
S'lichot, (forgiveness) is an interactive service during which we dress our Torah scrolls in their white covers, prepare for the High Holy Days, and hear the sound of the shofar for the first time this season. The service will be followed by a dessert reception. Please join us as we begin the transition to a sweet new year with old and new EET friends.

A Message from Karen Feuer, EET President

Dear Friend of East End Temple,

We invite you to worship with us during the High Holy Days as we celebrate and welcome in the Year 5771. We suggest that you purchase tickets in time to ensure your participation.

This year, as in past years, we will be worshipping at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and at East End Temple.

We have kept the cost of tickets this year at $360 per person for all the High Holy Day services. They may be purchased by downloading our order form or contacting our office. One ticket will admit you to both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services and is not transferable. Your ticket will also provide entry to our Sisterhood sponsored Break-the-Fast reception following Yom Kippur concluding services.

If you decide to become a member of our temple community by December 31, 2010, we will gladly apply the cost of your High Holy Day tickets towards your EET membership rate and we do hope you consider this option. If you have any questions about membership and fees, please contact us.

I look forward to worshipping with you during the holiday season.

L’Shanah Tovah,

Karen Feuer, President

Explanation of Services & Programs

Traditional Service: Our traditional High Holy Day morning services will be led by Rabbi David Adelson and Cantor Shira Ginsburg. Using the prayer books, “Gates of Repentance,” our clergy will lead the congregation in a meaningful worship experience filled with uplifting music and inspirational words. These services are appropriate for all adults and children over the age of 12.
Tickets required; Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur mornings, 10:00 AM, HUC-JIR Lower Level

Family Service: This intergenerational service is designed to provide an opportunity for the entire family (children, parents, grandparent, and friends) to worship together. We will use an EET created prayer book that will appeal to congregants of all ages, and incorporates festive music and inspiring prayers. Led by Rabbinic Intern, Sara Luria, and Cantorial Student, Bonnie Streigold, the family services will last approximately 90 minutes and are most appropriate for ages 6 and up.
Tickets not required; Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur mornings, 10:30 AM, HUC-JIR Chapel (main floor)

Tot Program: We have a High Holy Day experience planned just for our youngest friends. Hear the shofar blasts, sing songs and prayers, dance, listen to stories, and more. Led by Cantorial Student, Bonnie Streigold, the tot programs will last approximately 45 minutes and are most appropriate for children ages 6 and under (accompanied by an adult.)
Tickets not required; Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur afternoons, 2:30 PM, East End Temple, Sanctuary

Teen Program: This year we will be hosting our first Teen High Holy Day program. Join our Youth Advisor, Ben Fink, for informal programming emphasizing the themes of the High Holy Days. We will come together as a community to study, reflect, pray and socialize. The teen program is for students in eighth through twelfth grades and will last approximately 45 minutes.
Tickets not required; Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur afternoons, 2:30 PM, East End Temple, 3rd floor

Adult Study: Join us for informal study sessions on topics related to the High Holy Days. Led by Rabbinic Intern, Sara Luria, the 45 minute adult study session will be sure to engage your mind and spirit.
Tickets not required; Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur afternoons, 2:30 PM, East End Temple, 4th floor

Tashlich: Tashlich means "casting off" and involves symbolically casting off the sins of the previous year by tossing pieces of bread or another food into a body of flowing water. Just as the water carries away the bits of bread, so too are our sins symbolically carried away. We will gather as a community for a short ceremony along the East River and then have a chance to perform this ritual.
Tickets not required; Rosh Hashanah afternoon, 4:00 PM, Stuyvesant Cove (East 20th St., at the East River)

Yizkor: Yizkor means "may (God) remember," from the root word zakhor--remember. It is the memorial service, recited four times a year in the synagogue, one of which is on Yom Kippur. We will hold a community Yizkor service following our Yom Kippur traditional morning service.
Tickets not required; Yom Kippur afternoon, 12:45PM, HUC-JIR, Lower Level

Yom Kippur Afternoon: Afternoon, Evening, Neilah (closing), and Havdalah (separation) services will be led by Rabbi David Adelson and Cantor Shira Ginsburg. Following services, a Sisterhood sponsored break the fast buffet will be served in the social hall.
Tickets required; Yom Kippur afternoon, 4:30 PM, East End Temple, Sanctuary
