East End Temple Wins Prestigious Architecture Award
We are proud to announce that the interior of East End Temple’s new home has been selected as a recipient of the 2005 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Honor Awardsin the category of outstanding interiors. According to the AIA, this award represents “the profession’s highest recognition of works that exemplify excellence in architecture, interior architecture and urban design.” Chosen from over 630 entries, we are one of 35 projects to be selected, and our architects, BKSK Architects, will be honored in May at the AIA 2005 National Convention to be held in Las Vegas.
The AIA is the nation’s foremost professional organization dedicated to promoting and serving the needs of the architectural community. One of its founding members in 1857 was Richard Morris Hunt, the prominent Beaux-Arts architect who designed our building. It is especially fitting that the private residence he built in 1883 and now houses East End Temple should be honored by the organization he helped established.
Since moving into our new home, we at East End Temple have been delighted at the way in which the design of our building so beautifully meets our spiritual and programming needs. The AIA Honor Awards is further confirmation of what those of us in the congregation already know - that East End Temple is a special place to gather and worship.
Helene Spring Library
The Helene Spring Library, which held its formal dedication and opening on January 11, 2004, serves and supports the temple family, both members and staff. The library maintains a collection of Judaica print materials and provides relevant programming to enhance the spiritual and intellectual lives of our constituent populations. In addition to our valuable collection of informational materials, recreational reading, and reference resources, we have internet access, as well as a sophisticated software program, enabling patrons to research a wide variety of Judaic topics. The library is open to members and staff during regular temple hours, during which patrons may simply browse our shelves, relax with a book, or check out books. Researchers not affiliated with our congregation may use library materials.
Social Hall
We are thrilled to have a spacious Social Hall to accommodate our Temple events – weekly Oneg Shabbat, monthly Congregational Dinners, Religious School class dinners, Purim Carnival, annual Book Fair, etc. Equipped with a catering kitchen, the Social Hall is available for rental to both members and non-members for their simchahs. We also make it available to local organizations to hold meetings and events. Maximum number of occupants – 90 people. Contact the Temple office at (212) 477-6444 or info@eastendtemple.org for availability and fees.
Judaica Shop
The Judaica Shop sells beautiful gift items, books, ritual objects, and assorted merchandise, much of it from Israel. It is especially well stocked during the Jewish Holidays with donations that enable you to enhance your celebrations. Much of our Judaica merchandise is kids-oriented. Come take a look.
